Axonic Capital Head of Credit Matthew Weinstein recently appeared on The Dealmakers’ Edge with A.Y. Strauss podcast. Weinstein discussed his beginnings in the business, current market dynamics and advice for ambitious upstarts looking for future opportunities. “We’re certainly preparing for what we think could be a large number of secondary loan sales,” said Weinstein when asked about the current investment environment and its impact on real estate strategy. He believes the turbulence within smaller and regional banking will create significant opportunities, and somebody needs to fill that void.
On real estate, Weinstein noted that office as an asset class is facing fundamental deterioration, with leases rolling and subleases going on the market, and the availability of debt has had a material impact on their evaluations. To the contrary, multi-family debt remains readily available, and rent growth, while slowing, remains positive. The lack of availability of debt in commercial real estate will also have a material impact on evaluations.
